During its one thousand years of existence, the city grew from a small settlement to a multicultural capital of the modern European state Czech Republic. Prague is also known as the “City of Gold” because the evening sun gives its rooftops a golden glow. The turbulent history of the city included three centuries under the Habsburg monarchy, six years of Nazi occupation and four decades of communism. Despite all the historical changes, Prague has maintained its charm and beautiful architecture and has now become a tourist magnet.
